Sardine Pasta With Lemon & Garlic Crumbs

July 12, 2026 by Aimee

The aroma of sizzling garlic and the vibrant tang of lemon fill the kitchen as you whip up this delightful dish. Sardine Pasta With Lemon & Garlic Crumbs is a quick and satisfying meal that takes just 30 minutes to prepare, making it perfect for busy weeknights or leisurely weekends. This recipe stands out not only for its rustically comforting flavors but also for its delightful texture contrast between the crisp garlic crumbs and the tender pasta.

This recipe is ideal for anyone seeking a quick dinner solution that’s both nutritious and flavorful. It’s great for weeknight meals but can also shine at informal gatherings. If you’re planning ahead, you can prepare the garlic crumbs and sautéed onion in advance for a faster assembly at mealtime.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Enjoy the crunch of toasted garlic breadcrumbs that elevate the dish’s flavor and texture.
  • Delight in the richness of sardines, packed with omega-3 fatty acids for a nutritional boost.
  • Experience the freshness of lemon zest and parsley that brighten every bite.
  • Prepare in under 30 minutes, making it perfect for weekdays or last-minute dinners.

What You’ll Need

Gather the ingredients for this delicious meal:

For the Pasta

  • 6 ounces spaghetti or linguine

For the Sardine Mixture

  • 1 tin sardines packed in extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chopped sweet onion
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • Zest of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)

For the Topping

  • 3/4 cup fresh breadcrumbs (or panko)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

For Serving

  • Lemon wedges

Use panko for extra crunch if desired.

Substitutions & Swaps

  • Linguine can replace spaghetti.
  • Fresh breadcrumbs can be substituted with store-bought panko.
  • Capers are optional but add briny flavor.

How to Make It

Follow these simple steps to create your dish:

1. Boil the Water

Put a pot of salted water on to boil for the pasta.

2. Sauté the Garlic

Drain the olive oil from the sardines into a frying pan and set the fish aside. Heat the pan over medium heat, add the garlic, and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

3. Toast the Breadcrumbs

Add the breadcrumbs, season lightly with salt and pepper, and continue cooking, stirring often, until the crumbs are lightly toasted and crisp, 2 to 4 minutes. Transfer them to a plate and set aside.

4. Cook the Onions

Return the pan to the stove and add the 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the chopped onion, season lightly with salt and pepper, and sauté until soft and golden brown, 5 to 7 minutes.

5. Combine the Sardines & Spices

Add the sardines, break them apart gently, and cook just long enough to heat them through, about 2 minutes. Stir in the lemon zest, parsley, capers, and crushed red pepper. Remove from the heat and cover to keep warm.

6. Cook the Pasta

Cook the pasta according to package directions, reserving 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid. Drain the pasta and add it to the sardine mixture.

7. Toss It Together

Toss all the ingredients together, adding the pasta water, one or two tablespoons at a time, as needed to help coat the pasta and distribute the sardines and sautéed onion.

8. Serve with Crumbs

Add the toasted breadcrumbs, toss again, and plate individual servings. Garnish with lemon wedges and a sprinkling of black pepper if desired.

How to Store It

Fridge: store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: no, the pasta texture will suffer.
Reheat: microwave for 1-2 minutes or until warm.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use high-quality sardines packed in olive oil for the best flavor.
  • Be careful not to overcook the breadcrumbs as they can burn quickly.
  • Add a splash of pasta water gradually to achieve a creamy consistency.
  • Customize with more herbs like dill or basil for added freshness.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pair with a light green salad for a refreshing side.
  • Serve with crusty bread to soak up the flavorful oil.
  • Enjoy with a crisp white wine for the perfect meal.
